World Class Commissioning (WCC) - overview

World class commissioning is a term coined by the Government Department of Health for their ambitions health services change programme which aims to ‘transform the way health and care services are commissioned’.

The big picture aim is to ‘deliver a more strategic and long-term approach to commissioning services, with a clear focus on delivering improved health outcomes’. The changes, which are now well advanced, will completely separate the provider role from the commissioning role. Organisations with responsibilty for commissioning services, such as the Primary Care Trusts, will essentially be able to commission providers based anywhere, including abroad, so long as they are able to offer the best solutions both in terms of value for money and ability to deliver the tough standards and targets set by government and locally.
