A lot more competition will be created between potential providers and of course, this is the idea. This will be achieved by benchmarking performance against national standards and bringing about improved choice for patients when using national health services. This move towards a more market led approach is expected to drive up the quality of servcies and persumably offer better value for money.
There are going to be new opportunities for current and aspiring health care providers across all sectors and to a degree, regardless of where the organisation is based. However, would be providers will need to know how to put a good tender together and how to manage effective delivery once they win a contract.
The commissioning bodies for their part will need to have excellent procurement and contract management capabilities and compared to local authorities (who are by no means perfect) they have much development work to do on this front.
