Not many people realise the importance of registering with the Data Protection Commissioner. But if you want to win public sector business through the tender process registering is essential.
Some buyers will check and if your company is not registered could automatically rule you out of being invited to tender.
It only costs £35 per year.
You do also need to have a policy saying how you will store, control and use peoples personal data and of course your policy needs to reflect what you actually do.
If that all seems like too much effort compare the effort with the potential for you or your company to be sued for unlimited damages. The Data Commissioner is also tracking down companies that are in breach i.e. not registered and fining them up to £5000.
